World Environment Day
06 Jun 2015The UN World Environment Day is now celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide, with the Prodivers teams on Kuredu and Komandoo joining the list of participants this year for the first time.
To help raise awareness of the threats faced by the coral reefs of the Maldives, we offered a course for participants allowing them to find out more about coral growth, the need for healthy reefs and how they benefit society. The course concluded with an update on the health of coral reefs and the effects of coral bleaching.
In order to help try and give the reefs a helping hand around Kuredu, the participants joined our instructors and snorkel guides to help transplant some coral onto specially created ‘coral trays’ that have been placed in the lagoon area. This coral reef regeneration project was started around 6 months ago, and yesterday we added another 5 trays to the reef.
With coral taking many years to grown and develop, these coral trays will hopefully be around to welcome back the participants for many years to come.
A big thank to those that participated : Dee, Stephen, Paul, Rebecca, Sharon, Rich, Jennifer, Michael and Michael! We would also like to thank the support of Mie, Steffi, Ludwig, Michael, Karola, Nika and Kamil.
