Snorkel Action: Ornate Eagle Ray
08 Jul 2013
Diving in the Maldives allows the chance to see some pretty rare things (Manta Rays, Sharks, turtles etc.) However so does snorkelling. Yesterday Jon, one of our snorkel guides and two lucky guests were lucky enough to discover an Ornate Eagle Ray on Kuredu’s House reef. The Ornate Eagle Ray is one of the Maldives rarest inhabitants, reaching sizes of up to 3ms, its characteristic tiger stripes and massive head make it easy to distinguish form other eagle ray types.
The Ornate was first discovered here in the Lhaviayni Atoll, so it perhaps not surprising that they are seen here, but they are anything but common, with sightings only occurring 1-2 times a year.
