Silvertip sharks and scooters – a dive to remember

26 Jun 2017

Guests at Prodivers Kuredu were once again extremely happy after a successful scooter dive on the KFFC to Peak Channel Crossing. The conditions were fantastic with visibility of 15 to 20 meters.

Those hoping for big fish encounters were in for a treat with a large group of Eagle Rays flying past, cruising Grey Reef sharks and Barracudas. The absolute stars of the show though were the Silvertip sharks who put on an amazing show with non-stop action.

The KFFC to Peak Crossing offers a good chance of seeing these pelagic marine creatures. Silvertip sharks are remarkably majestic and grow to a size of up to 3 meters. Feeding on bony fish, Eagle Rays and even smaller shark species they are a powerful and dominant species in the oceans. Sadly their worldwide population has seen a decline in the last few decades due to commercial fisheries’ trade for their meat, fins, skin and jaws. We consider ourselves very lucky here in the Lhaviyani Atoll, to have a dive site with such a good chance of seeing them.

The Lhaviyani Atoll is characterized by the channels between the reefs and these sites are far more accessible to divers using scooters.

If you’re interested in diving with a scooter and experiencing these action-packed dives, or leaning about sharks and rays why not consider the specialty courses:
