Shark Week 2019 with Prodivers Maldives

05 Aug 2019

Shark Week 2019 saw the teams at Prodivers dive centers celebrate these amazing creatures in the best way possible – spending time with them in their natural environment, the ocean. The teams’ love of sharks is well-known, as is the Maldives for being a world-renowned shark diving hot-spot, and their love was shared on dives and snorkel trips as well as in the classrooms, on the boats and pretty much anywhere else they could! Prodivers even shared their sharky love with the world on Facebook and Instagram too! If you missed Shark Week don’t worry – every week is a shark week with Prodivers Maldives!

Take a look at how the Prodivers teams across the Maldives celebrated Shark Week 2019:

Shark Week Komandoo Maldives

Komandoo
On Komandoo we celebrated the Shark week from 28.07.-04.08.19 and had amazing shark encounters. We went several times to the famous ‘Big Fish’ dive sites: KFFK, Kuredu Express, Fushivaru Kandu and Felivaru Kandu. The highlights of the week were our scooter channel-crossing 2-Tank boats where we saw groups of 60-80 sharks each dive. For the end of Shark Week, the Prodivers team on Komandoo showed their guests a video about Shark Conservation. Let’s protect our Sharks!

Shark Week celebrations Kuredu Maldives

Kuredu
In Kuredu the Shark Week started off with a bang! The first dive on KFFK with scooters had all guests awestruck: Silver tips, lemon sharks, lots of grey reef sharks and eagle rays as far as the eye could see. Many of the other dives had sleeping nurse sharks and grey reef encounters and a very lucky zebra shark sighting! The night snorkelling and caves snorkel trips were also very successful with nurse sharks, blacktips hunting and a Mobula ray! The highlights though, had to be the shark presentations, which our marine biologist Kristina held at the dive centre, about Maldivian sharks, their conservation and the myths about the great white shark.

Shark Week celebrations Innahura Maldives

Innahura
Prodivers Innahura celebrated Shark Week 2019 with plentiful shark sightings. Divers and snorkelers alike were spoiled with many a nurse shark at Turtle Rock’s top reef. Our scooter divers encountered Meyyafushi channel’s grey reef shark family consisting of a dozen adults and over 40 juveniles.

Shark Week celebrations Lily Beach Maldives

Lily Beach
Shark Week 2019 was a total success! Already on the first day, a huge whale shark surprised our divers on Lily Beach during the full day trip. On the following days, there were a lot of shark sightings. White-tip and black-tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks and nurse sharks – we saw them all!

Vakarufalhi
Encounters during Shark Week in Vakarufalhi amazed not only our freshly certified divers, but also our experienced repeater guests! They have enjoyed channel and drift dives at dive sites, such as Broken Rock, Vakarufalhi Beru Thila and Rheeti Thila, where they met groups of White and Black-Tip Reef Sharks. One of the divers actually had her 100th dive surrounded by 4-5 Grey Reef Sharks! Our beginner buddy teams were also lucky to swim close by a 6-7 Meter big Whaleshark. What an experience on the first dive right after finishing their PADI Open Water Course!

Shark Week celebrations Hurawalhi Maldives

Hurawalhi
We had a fantastic Shark Week here at Prodivers Hurawalhi, ending with a special Shark Week talk by one of our resident Manta Trust researchers. This talk shed light on the amazing and diverse world of sharks and rays, as well as threats now putting many species at risk of extinction. We hope guests enjoyed learning about these fascinating and misunderstood creatures, and will do their part to protect them in the future!
