Manta Madness
02 Nov 2015
Whoop whoop, it’s that time of the year again! The Manta Ray season has kicked off, and judging by its first two weeks, good times are ahead for all those of us who find the Mantas nothing less than awesome.
Over the past two weeks, our dives and snorkellers have been lucky that their holiday at Kuredu Resort & Spa coincided with regular Manta Ray sightings around the Atoll. Fushivaru Thila, in particular, has received the most action. Several Mantas frequented the dive site to have their bodies cleaned, and the plankton-rich areas at nearby reefs provided what appeared a tasty soup that dozens of Manta Rays satiated their hunger with.
During one of our half day snorkelling trips, we counted 20+ individuals chain-feeding on plankton, performing barrel rolling, and interacting with our guests, which were given perfect conditions to return their love: flat water, a tiny current, and not a single cloud in the sky.
With the Manta Ray season around Kuredu being in full swing, we hope that we’ll get to identify many new individuals this season, and continue to help the Manta Trust with the Maldivian Manta Ray Project. If you’d like to find more about the research we’re involved in, talk to any of us as we’re always thrilled to share our passion and knowledge about these awe-inspiring giants of the ocean.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed for the season to continue in the same manner as it started. So far, so epic!
