Everyone loves the Maldives’ turtles
02 Dec 2014
Monday, 24th of November, marked ‘Turtle day’ at Komandoo Resort & Spa. The event was a great success!
Dr. Jillian Hudgins of the Olive Ridley Project who works with the Maldivian government to help protect and spread awareness about sea turtles, was the guest of honour.
Over half of Komandoo guest and staff came to listen to Jillian give a talk about the different species of turtles we have in our atoll, details of how they live, the dangers they face and what we can do to help the declining populations.
Afterwards, 9 snorkellers and 12 divers went out onto our incredible house reef to try to find some turtles. Fortunately, there were plenty around and the groups came back with good, clear photos of 7 different turtles. These photos were analysed by the group and Dr. Hudgins, and turtles were recorded and placed into turtle database to help us keep track of them. Turtles that were new were also given names by their photographers.
We look forward to helping the Maldivian turtle ID programme in the future. Stay tuned for more turtle conservation news from Prodivers Komandoo!
