Top 10 Tips for Snorkelling in the Maldives
24 Jun 2019A holiday in the Maldives isn’t complete without seeing the incredible underwater world and the best way to experience it is to go snorkelling. Reefs teeming with colourful fish, turtles munching on the seagrass before gliding up to take another breath, rays gracefully flying by and Nemo waiting to be found in the many anemones – all you need to do is take the plunge, pop along to the dive center and ask about snorkelling. Prodivers has all the equipment you need, patient and friendly snorkel guides to help you learn the techniques and a safe, shallow lagoon for practicing in, all you need is to be able to swim and a desire for a little adventure!
Top 10 tips for fun and safe snorkelling:
- Ask at the dive center for an introduction session – great for learning the correct techniques and building confidence
- Never snorkel alone – always go with a buddy
- Use a well-fitting mask– don’t over-tighten it as this will cause it to leak. Water will get into any mask or snorkel but they are very easy to clear when you know how
- Don’t use a Full-face snorkelling mask – Prodivers does not advocate the use of these masks and no longer offers them in their rental section due to the potential associated dangers
- Wear fins – they will make it much easier to swim in a current. It is better to have them a little loose rather than too tight to avoid cramps
- Use sun protection – rash guards and shorts are great while snorkelling and apply sun protection too– ideally a reef-friendly variety
- Check with the dive center for the best and safest places to snorkel
- Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water
- Take a snorkel vest if you need a little confidence boost
- Join the guided tours and snorkel boats – our guides are experts in the local area and you’ll see a lot more with them
