Best Activities for Seeing Mantas in the Maldives

08 Nov 2022

There’s no doubt about it, if you’ve always wanted to see manta rays The Maldives is the place to go! With the luxurious villas, indulgent spas and gastronomic journeys on offer at the resorts’ restaurants it’s all too easy to get caught up in the chilled-out island life and wile away the time simply relaxing and enjoying island life but to see the mantas you’ll need to do a little more…namely go snorkelling or scuba diving!

In manta season we run dedicated Manta Search boats so pop along to the dive centre to find out more and secure yourself a place on one. Snorkellers can be treated to the sight of more than 30 mantas feeding at the surface, huge mouths open wide for funneling in the nutrient-rich water containing their feast of tiny krill and other plankton. Swooping and whirling in a feeding train, one behind the other, they can keep snorkellers bewitched for ages.

The traditional manta hot spot of the Lhaviyani Atoll, Fushivaru Thila, is the place to be for divers. The huge coral blocks are the cleaning stations and with the right conditions it can be a hive of manta activity.

If you haven’t tried diving or snorkelling yet but don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to glimpse the mantas, be sure to visit the dive centre at the start of your stay. Our friendly and patient team can help you gain the snorkelling skills you need to enable you to join the boats. Or, if you’re determined to dive with the mantas, we recommend you book the PADI Open Water Diver course and complete it early in your holiday – the eLearning option means you can do all the theory at home in your own time.
