Lucky Divers on Lily Beach: Diving in Clouds of Mobula Mantas
06 Mar 2017Another lucky full day dive trip with Prodivers Lily Beach: in addition to very good conditions with clear blue water, medium current and amazing fish life, our divers had several encounters with large schools of mobula mantas. On both dives all our divers were lucky to swim with huge ray families; some guests counted more than 50 in one group!
These mobula mantas are also called shortfin pygmy devilray (Mobula kuhlii) and their appearance is similar to manta rays, which are in the same family, but mobulas are smaller.
All our divers agreed this experience was far better than seeing a whale shark, and for most of them, including our instructors, it was the best diving day ever.
A big thank you to Mark from the UK who was able to catch some of the action with his GoPro.
We are looking forward to our next trip to the south in the hope that mobulas will be still around!
