Lemon Sharks In Kuredu’s Lagoon

31 Aug 2010

Following on from a number of guests arriving at the dive center with photos of unusual visitors to the lagoon around Kuredu, Benjamin and Markus headed out to investigate the strange looking shark.

It didn’t take long for the snorkel guide and instructor to find one of the sharks, and they immediately snapped some photos of it.

Investigations back at the dive center brought them to the conclusion that the shark is in fact a Lemon Shark.  A ‘Sicklefin Lemon Shark’ to be precise, which are found in depths down to 30m and grows to almost 4m in length.

Lemon Shark sightings in the Maldives are pretty rare.  It has also been noted that these sharks are not great travelers, and that once they find a suitable feeding location, they tend to stay around these shallow waters close to shore.   This lead to them being easy targets for the shark fin traders and has seen the species disappear from many Asian waters.
