There has been great excitement for the past few weeks, when we have had numerous encounters with whale sharks in Lhaviyani Atoll – usually a rare occurrence!

As many of you who dive with us regularly will know, the Prodivers team at Lily Beach in South Ari are the ones with regular whale shark encounters, while for the teams further north, in Lhaviyani Atoll, whale shark encounters are a rarity. You can imagine the excitement when, for the past few weeks, we have had numerous encounters with the biggest fish in the ocean in Lhaviyani!

During the first half of October, our teams at Jawakara and Innahura were lucky enough to spot whale sharks almost every single day. In the middle of November a whale shark was spotted at Fushivaru Thile – a favourite hang out of manta rays at this time of year. This was a rare sighting and a treasured moment for all who shared it.

Individual whale sharks can be identified by the pattern of their spots, they are unique just like our fingerprints. The Maldives Whale Shark Research Program uses the whale shark’s spots to not only identify them, but also to track where they go and and form a picture of their habits which helps them to advocate conservation policy. Whale sharks endangered globally and are a protected species under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act in the Maldives.

Swimming with whale sharks is thrilling and awe-inspiring but it is important to do so respectfully and sustainably. Follow the rules below for an enjoyable and responsible experience.
