Mosti’s favourite dive site
11 May 2019The Maldives, one of the world’s most renowned scuba diving destinations, is home to an incredible variety of dive sites and an abundance of marine life. There are beautiful underwater islands teeming with life, vast stretches of outer reef with caves and overhangs, and channels where the currents run wild and the big fish patrol. When asked to pick a favourite site many people struggle to come up with an answer straight away; we asked Mosti, one of the dive instructors from Prodivers Hurawalhi in the Lhaviyani Atoll, about his favourite dive site…
Mosti’s favourite dive site is Kuredu House Reef:
“Kuredu House Reef is accessible all year round and in all conditions. It’s always ROCKING!
A lot of people think that just because it is a house reef on the inside of the atoll that you won’t see a variety of fish life but this couldn’t be more wrong. Kuredu House Reef has been protected by Kuredu Island for more than 30 years, which makes it a haven for fish – from small critters all the way up to the big fish. The variety and colour of the fish living there is not seen in many other places in the atoll. Small and big you have cleaner fish and napoleons, anthias and eagle rays, mantis shrimps and grey reef sharks, sweetlips and green sea turtles and don’t forget about schools of fusiliers, jacks, snappers, butterfly fish, batfish, and an endless field of garden eels. Another reason this place is so amazing is the one of a kind wreck standing upright on the reef starting from 3m all the way down to 21m. The wreck is home to giant moray eels, huge napoleons, bump head parrotfish at night, giant groupers, painted lobsters, schools of glassfish and hundreds of cleaner shrimp. All things considered, it’s an amazing place to dive but one thing stands out – it’s not only a dive site for the day but also for the NIGHT and just as beautiful in the dark. You don’t need to be experienced to visit this site it is enjoyed by beginners and seasoned divers alike. It’s for everyone and it has everything and that is why I love it.”
Although the Lhaviyani Atoll is home to famous dive sites such as Kuredu Express for shark action, Kuredu Caves for its large community of green sea turtles and Fushivaru Thila for mantas, each and every one of the reefs has something unique and special to see and they’re never the same twice so be sure to try the lesser known sites as well as the famous – they may well end up being favourites!
