10 New Mantas. 10 New Names.
21 Mar 2014
The last 3 months have seen some awesome Manta action, with sightings almost every day at the ‘Sand Bank’ (close to Kuredu) or at Dhanifaru.
As a result we have identified 10 new Mantas as part of our partipication in the Manta Trust’s research project. These 10, have never been seen in the Lhaviyani Atoll or anywhere else in the Maldives before!
We asked our guests and Facebook friends to help give these mantas an identity by suggesting and voting for their favourite names.
We are pleased to announce that the following names were selected for the new additions to the Maldives population:
- Tara
- Maisie
- Moo
- Kapila
- Tiki
- Babul
- Elli
- Alhas
- Jona
- Alexis
That means that there have been 283 Mantas identified in the Lhaviyani Atoll alone, and about 3,000 Mantas recorded in the whole Maldives over the last few years. What an achievement!
The Manta Trust , a UK based charity, which tries to conserve those beautiful animals through research, awareness and education. Prodivers supports this initiative by providing Manta pictures submitted by our guests and helping with identification and recording of any of our sightings. Through this work, we will hopefully be able to protect our Mantas for future generations and thus also have a lot of these Mantas continue visiting our lovely atoll in the future.
