Turtle Hatchlings!
10 Jan 2010
Late yesterday afternoon, rumors started running around the island that there were turtles hatching on the island. Sure enough, the rumors turned out to be true and the little ones started digging their way out of their nest.
Normally hatching at night around full moon, yesterdays event took everyone by surprise! The eggs themselves were laid just over 2 months ago, and digging their way up to the surface requires a huge effort from the tiny hatchlings. Once the first turtles broke out onto the sand, the floodgates opened and the majority of the turtles came rushing out. Check out the “The Last 7 Days” Section in the
”Video Gallery” to see the highlights of this amazing event!
Green Sea Turtles have been using Kuredu as a nesting site for hundreds of years. We typically see nests every 2 to 4 years, with the mothers laying between 80 and 120 eggs in one sitting. Kuredu Caves is a well known diving and snorkel site, located on the northern side of the island, which is home to a unique green turtle community and to which we hope this latest addition to the turtle population will someday return.
Those keen in learning more about Sea Turtles can join the “Sea Turtle Specialty Course”, which was developed by Prodivers and for which we have a separate course running for both snorkelers and divers alike. Divers also receive a PADI Distinctive Specialty Certification upon completion of the course.
