30. KUREDU CAVES

Kuredu Caves is a very unique dive site, not just here in the Lhaviyani Atoll, but also across the world. The site is also known as ‘Turtle Airport’ due to the large population of green sea turtles that live here. Normally turtles are solitary creatures, but at Kuredu Caves, there is a unique community of turtles living together.

Kuredu Caves has a series of overhangs starting at 8 meters and dropping down to 20 meters. The resident green turtles live in these overhangs, resting for most of the day, but frequently venturing out to make their way up to the surface to breathe. There are also cleaning stations at each end of the site where the meticulous green turtles go to keep their shells spotlessly clean. As a result of this unique community of turtles at Caves, Prodivers has developed the PADI Distinctive SEA TURTLE SPECIALTY COURSE, which can be enjoyed by both divers and snorkelers alike.

The ceilings of the overhangs are covered in soft corals and soldier fish swimming upside down. Stingrays can also be spotted on the sandy areas on the deeper ledges and big napoleons can also be seen cruising by. Porcupine fish, lion fish, moray eels, and scorpion fish all make the overhangs their home. Kuredu Caves is also a spectacular night dive!
