Ornate eagleray-Aquarium

Aquarium is well known for its occasional encounters with guitar sharks, but Wednesday afternoon was something special. After 40 minutes looking for these elusive rays two of our staff were approaching their limits and having to admit defeat in their search.

As they started to slowly ascend, Anna from our office team spotted what she thought was a manta approaching the base of the (more…)

frogfish Komandoo House Reef

Josep has found his third Frog Fish on Komandoo House Reef.

During the last five years, we have seen a few Frog Fish on the House Reef. The first one was green and did not stay too long. Then we found a red one at the north east side at 12m.

The last one is also red and pretty small. Is sitting at about 16m depth in the same coral block where we can see two white Leaf Fish too!!  Sweet!!!

ribbon eel Kuredu Maldives

Two of our repeater guests, Hermann from Austria (17 times) and Carsten from Germany (4 times), went out for a morning dive to Maagiri South and came back with a great picture of a ribbon eel!

Ribbon Eels are very often seen at Nakolhu Giri,  but the one at Maagiri was very unexpected but therefore even more appreciated!

It was already close to the end of the dive when Hermann suddenly stopped (more…)

Whaleshark Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

As many of you will know, the elusive whale shark is an extremely infrequent visitor to our waters, so when we heard a rumour that some of them had been spotted on the outreef at Kanifushi we immediately filled a boat with divers and headed down there!

You can imagine how happy we were to come across a couple of them patrolling up and down on top of the reef before diving down into the blue and we immediately jumped in (more…)

Frog Fish Anemone

One of our guests couldn’t hide his amazement when he discovered a very strange fish on Anemone Thila.

Excitedly, he called Markus, one of our instructors, and showed him his discovery.  Markus was just as amazed -  A big pink-/orange coloured Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson) was sitting proudly on show in the middle of a big table coral.

Froggies are normally (more…)

Komandoo Whaleshark

A New Years Eve morning trip to Kuda Kandu on the east side of Lhaviyani atoll brought an even bigger end of year surprise than any of a fortunate handful of Komandoo guests could have ever expected…

Almost true to form, the divers were treated to numerous grey reef sharks, several large Napoleon wrasse, plus a formation of white-spotted eagle rays flying slowly by. What appeared next however truly was “out of the blue”… (more…)

Whaleshark Kuredu Maldives

The buzz of excitement around both Kuredu and Komandoo has been unbelievable the past week or so,  as our divers and snorkelers have been eagerly waiting to head out on one of the special full day trips that we’ve had on. The plankton rich reefs around the Atoll have been attracting some very big visitors indeed – whalesharks.

Normally quite rare in the Lhaviyani Atoll, we watched on in amazement as the whalesharks have been returning day after day for almost 2 weeks now.  It turns out that the biggest fish (more…)

Migratory Birds Kuredu Maldives

Most people that come to the Maldives appreciate the beautiful birds that spend their time on the beaches!

Compare to the abundant underwater life around Kuredu, the land based animals are represented by only a few species.

The small size and isolation of this Indian Ocean Republic means that animal life is restricted and (more…)

Harlekinshrimp

We naturally get all excited about the big creatures such as sharks, manta rays and turtles that we see here so often – but last week this little fellow suddenly jumped right out in front of our lens, posing for a photo shoot and getting our attention back to all the interesting small animals that can be found around Kuredu.

This beauty is a Harlequin shrimp and was (more…)

Fluoro Diving Maldives Kuredu

It seems that there is still much more for us to find out about what lies beneath the surface of our oceans.

Anyone that has dived or snorkeled around the Maldives is well aware of the incredible colours on display both on the reef itself, and the fish that live there. The reef however has hidden secrets, which until now, were well guarded.

Following on from recent discoveries by scientists, we thought we would do some investigations of our own to check out what exactly happens at night to a reef when it is exposed to a blue light.  As we headed out with our modified torches and filters, we had no idea what would greet us.  The results from these 2 dives on the Kuredu House Reef and Bodu Giri blew us all away, and we couldn’t wait to share our discoveries.
