Maldives diving whaleshark

Imagine a squadron of eagle rays streaming past,  a couple of majestic mantas lingering around for half an hour and you diving with a scooter amongst them.  Oh,  and a whaleshark.

As evidenced by the photo,  one can have amazing encounters around Vakarufalhi.  This one took place at Digura Corner and there seems to be something about scooters that attracts big fish,  as our divers have been having similar experiences quite frequently.  Whalesharks remain surprisingly calm and don’t seem to be bothered by the excited divers at all.

What is even more awesome is that Marco,  one of the divers,  filmed the enviable encounter.  Not the worst idea for a souvenir from the Maldives!

Bowmouth Guitarfish Kuredu Maldives

The 12th of May was one of those days, when the divers did not know where to look first during their dive on Orimas Thila in the Noon Atoll…

Already their first dive at Christmas Rock was full of action. The divers were welcomed by 2 stingrays sharing their resting place under an overhang with 2 whitetip reefsharks, and at the end of the dive they even spotted a sleeping nurse shark at the giri. (more…)

Halimeda Komandoo Maldives

Among lots of green turtles and leaf fish and many other creatures, there are also two ghost pipefish at the Kuredu Caves. Actually, they have been there for a while, but we still would like to remind you about their presence there.

Sitting at about 11m depth, in a Halimeda algae spot and sharing that one with a green Leaf fish, these two tiny creatures spend their time hovering head-down (more…)

Ornate eagleray-Aquarium

Aquarium is well known for its occasional encounters with guitar sharks, but Wednesday afternoon was something special. After 40 minutes looking for these elusive rays two of our staff were approaching their limits and having to admit defeat in their search.

As they started to slowly ascend, Anna from our office team spotted what she thought was a manta approaching the base of the (more…)

frogfish Komandoo House Reef

Josep has found his third Frog Fish on Komandoo House Reef.

During the last five years, we have seen a few Frog Fish on the House Reef. The first one was green and did not stay too long. Then we found a red one at the north east side at 12m.

The last one is also red and pretty small. Is sitting at about 16m depth in the same coral block where we can see two white Leaf Fish too!!  Sweet!!!

ribbon eel Kuredu Maldives

Two of our repeater guests, Hermann from Austria (17 times) and Carsten from Germany (4 times), went out for a morning dive to Maagiri South and came back with a great picture of a ribbon eel!

Ribbon Eels are very often seen at Nakolhu Giri,  but the one at Maagiri was very unexpected but therefore even more appreciated!

It was already close to the end of the dive when Hermann suddenly stopped (more…)

Manta Ray Kuredu Maldives

There’s plenty of fish in the sea. Some of them are overlooked, some admired briefly, some make you want to play peekaboo with them for hours. And then – there’s manta rays.

Kuredu boasts an iconic long white stretch of sand that is impressive in itself. But currently the very mention of the sandbank is sufficient to bring excitement to both snorkelers and divers alike (admittedly, to (more…)

Whaleshark Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

As many of you will know, the elusive whale shark is an extremely infrequent visitor to our waters, so when we heard a rumour that some of them had been spotted on the outreef at Kanifushi we immediately filled a boat with divers and headed down there!

You can imagine how happy we were to come across a couple of them patrolling up and down on top of the reef before diving down into the blue and we immediately jumped in (more…)

Whaleshark Kuredu Maldives

The buzz of excitement around both Kuredu and Komandoo has been unbelievable the past week or so,  as our divers and snorkelers have been eagerly waiting to head out on one of the special full day trips that we’ve had on. The plankton rich reefs around the Atoll have been attracting some very big visitors indeed – whalesharks.

Normally quite rare in the Lhaviyani Atoll, we watched on in amazement as the whalesharks have been returning day after day for almost 2 weeks now.  It turns out that the biggest fish (more…)
