Shark or Ray every day!

harks Rays Maldives

In support of the European Shark Week and global shark conservation efforts,  along with the great success of the previous two years’ events,  we are thrilled to announce that we will again run the Shark and Ray Week Special in October.

Aimed at raising awareness of the importance of sustaining shark populations,  increasing education about these vulnerable creatures and giving our divers the opportunity to dive at some of the most amazing sites,  we are hoping for yet another great month of shark and ray action. How deep is your love?

Underwater proposal Kuredu

Aahh, we love our jobs, especially when we get to take part in very special, slightly different and this time – romantic dives. A couple of days ago we helped Ben, one of our guests, devise a plan to take his girlfriend on a dive. It turned out to be a very memorable one, for both of them.

Louise, diving in open water for the first time, didn’t have the slightest idea that her first dive would be so… well, stressful. She might have forgotten the ‘never hold your breath’ rule that our instructor Muin had taught her when Ben knelt down on the sandy bottom, showing her THE question written on the diving slate. A joyride

Maldives diving whaleshark

Imagine a squadron of eagle rays streaming past,  a couple of majestic mantas lingering around for half an hour and you diving with a scooter amongst them.  Oh,  and a whaleshark.

As evidenced by the photo,  one can have amazing encounters around Vakarufalhi.  This one took place at Digura Corner and there seems to be something about scooters that attracts big fish,  as our divers have been having similar experiences quite frequently.  Whalesharks remain surprisingly calm and don’t seem to be bothered by the excited divers at all.

What is even more awesome is that Marco,  one of the divers,  filmed the enviable encounter.  Not the worst idea for a souvenir from the Maldives!

Congratulations Birgitta and Goetz!

Rebreather Diving Kuredu Maldives

On the last day of August we were pleased to welcome Birgitta and Goetz from Singapore back to Kuredu for their second visit.

Their last trip here was more than 10 years ago and since that time, a lot of things have changed.  One of these changes includes the introduction of Closed Circuit Rebreather Diving, the fascination of “diving without bubbles”.

It was this thrill and the prospect of becoming certified CCR Divers Read the rest of this entry »

A perfect disguise

Scuba Diving Maldives Vakarufalhi

You think you’ve seen it all. And then you come across masters of camouflage that amaze you with their colours, patterns and un-fish-like behaviour.

Anyone being fortunate enough to spot a frogfish will surely stop and ponder its spectacular and bizarre appearance. They are bottom dwellers, using their tiny fins to clumsily move around, and if the need arises to swim, they suck in water through their massive mouth and eject it from their gill holes behind their head, jet-propelling themselves across the bottom. Attracted to the tasty looking lure on their head, the prey is rapidly swallowed whole as the frogfish literally stretches its mouth to the same size as its body. How creepy is that?
