Komandoo Day 2 – This is not a rock

Boot Show 2011

There are actually no rocks underwater in the Maldivian reefs. Everything solid that you can see underwater is either a coral or any human left over like, for instance, a wreck.

Corals there are either alive or , unfortunately too often, dead.  Sometimes it might be hard to see the difference at the first glance, but if you pay attention and a closer look you will see that some corals that Read the rest of this entry »

Yippee! It’s that time of year again!

Manta Ray Kuredu Maldives

No, we don’t mean Christmas & New Year, although that was a lot of fun!  We mean manta ray season for snorkelers!

The numbers of sightings are picking up all over the atoll, especially at Dhanifaru and right here on our door step at the Sandbank.  This means that it has become time to restart our very popular manta ray course which we offer to our snorkeling guests. Read the rest of this entry »

Whoa! Whale sharks in the Lhaviyani!

Whaleshark Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

As many of you will know, the elusive whale shark is an extremely infrequent visitor to our waters, so when we heard a rumour that some of them had been spotted on the outreef at Kanifushi we immediately filled a boat with divers and headed down there!

You can imagine how happy we were to come across a couple of them patrolling up and down on top of the reef before diving down into the blue and we immediately jumped in Read the rest of this entry »

Another Frogfish at Anemone Thila!

Frog Fish Anemone

One of our guests couldn’t hide his amazement when he discovered a very strange fish on Anemone Thila.

Excitedly, he called Markus, one of our instructors, and showed him his discovery.  Markus was just as amazed -  A big pink-/orange coloured Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson) was sitting proudly on show in the middle of a big table coral.

Froggies are normally Read the rest of this entry »

Honestly, we can’t think of anyone more devoted to instructor-level training than Ute. Her IDCs are very popular due to her friendly, supportive and open way of guiding candidates through the courses. Read the rest of this entry »
