During our usual morning walk around the island, we often see stingrays, baby black tip sharks and some trevallies going after the bait fish.
Herrings and crows also join the morning breakfast action trying to get some of the small stranded victims.
Today we came across to a very unusual visitor. Nothing less than a Patterned Eagle Ray!! (Aetomylaeus vespertillo).
This huge eagle ray, can easily reach more than 1.5 m wide and close to 4 m length including the long tail. With this distinctive reticulate pattern and massive head this unique creature is one of the most beautiful to be seen around Lhaviyani waters.

That takes me back to last august when a large feather tail ray kept coming the lagoon. Can’t wait to go back and dive with the Pro Divers Team.

I saw the same type of ray underwater and got some great photos of when I stayed on Kuredu island. It was impressively big as it overtook me when I was snorkeling across the sea grass just off the beach.
