Orchid Farewell from Komandoo

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Many people like Orchids. In fact it is the largest family of the flowering plants, with about 20.000 different species; tulips and vanilla among them. Due to the constant temperature in the Maldives of about 30 C, Orchids can survive all year round here with no need of a green house. We wanted to say goodbye to all the “audience” during this year’s edition of the Boot show with a “Sunrise on Komandoo with Orchid”. Hopefully you can come over to Komandoo soon to enjoy a dawn like this or a sunset like we saw the other day, or the beautiful underwater creatures or just to be lazy and feel the white, soft sand between your toes as you walk barefoot along the beach. Have a nice year and see you soon!!

Where is my breakfast?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Everybody on Komandoo has the chance to have a peaceful breakfast sitting on the terrace beside the sea. Even this beautiful Maakana wants to enjoy this. Looks like he’s asking: Where is my breakfast? These birds are quite common in the Maldives and they feed mainly on small bait fish that swims in the lagoon. Maybe this one is fed up with the same menu and wants to enjoy some eggs and bacon and a cup of coffee…

Cyber Café on Komandoo

Friday, January 29th, 2010

In front of the Dive Centre on Komandoo we have a table-hut that we normally use for resort dive briefings, log book fill up or whatever other reason to gather together for a while before or after the dive. It happens to be the area with the best  wi-fi coverage on the whole island! So… it becomes then the “Komandoo Cyber Café”. Probably one of the best “sea view” internet café of the World!!

Sunset at Komandoo

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Not every day we have such a dramatic sun set but sometimes we are endowed with a present like this.  Looking west towards the neighbour island of Hinavaru, you can see the Minaret of the Mosque and a “Maakana” bird standing on top of the wave breakers. Everything engulfed in this golden magical light unique of theIndian Ocean.                                          There is neither Photoshop nor adjustments done to that picture!! Promise!!

Ghost Pipe Fish Komandoo Maldives

Ghost Pipe Fish Komandoo Maldives

This little creature, an Ornate ghost pipefish was found recently in a concrete block, the moorage of one of the Dhonis in Komandoo. Sitting at only ten meters depth, along with some lion fish, is one of the rarest and prettiest critters to observe in Maldivian waters.

Komandoo Maldives

We saw yesterday that beautiful sand castle built on Komandoo beach. Today someone else got inspired by this and did another one! Also very nice, close to the other, we hope the Lilliput inhabitants of the castles don’t try to invade each other like in the ancient times…

Komandoo Maldives

Komandoo Maldives

Everybody who as been in the Maldives, knows how pleasant is to walk barefoot on the white sandy beaches of this unique place. Here in Komandoo some people are even more delighted by this and like to create some work of art with this fine sand. As you can see in the pictures, this almost “Neuschwanstein” creation is quite a piece of work!

Sand Turtle

Turtle Komandoo Maldives

Well, you know… Komandoo is also known as Turtle island.  In fact this is the logo of the island, a turtle. So here we are! We have a nice “sand” turtle done by one of the guests with a lot of sand and patience…  If this one lays eggs in the sand, we wonder how the hatchlings will look like!!

It’s All Shiny And New!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Despite the warm weather, the blue ocean and endless Manta sightings at the moment, we have actually been knuckling down to bring you something new and exciting!  Welcome to the PD Blog!

This Blog will replace the previous ‘Latest News’ section on the website, but don’t worry, all the old links will still bring you to the latest articles, and all of the previous news has been safely stored in a newly created News Archive.  One of the great things about switching to this new Blog is that we want you to be involved in this website as well.  So when we tell you about the 20+ Mantas at Fushivaru Thila, you can now back us up – adding your own experiences of your dives and snorkeling trips with us.  We will explain more about this shortly, because this is not all that we have changed!  (more…)
